Attendees of the 13th annual JCEF Tax & Estate Planning Seminar will once again hear from a nationally known authority on tax, estate and business planning during a Morning Session for professional advisors and an Afternoon Session for donors, special friends and advisors. In between, there will be a special Community Luncheon for all attendees.

This year’s featured speaker, Daniel H. Markstein, III of Maynard, Cooper & Gale P.C. in Birmingham, AL, will present on Advanced Estate Planning Strategies in a Changing Environment: Latest and Greatest Business Succession, Wealth Transfer and Charitable Planning Techniques.
Mr. Markstein is a Fellow and Past President of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel, a Fellow of the American College of Tax Counsel, a Trustee of the American Institute on Federal Taxation, and a Past President of the Estate Planning Council of Birmingham. He has authored articles for various publications on tax, business succession, estate and charitable planning techniques. Mr. Markstein has lectured frequently at legal education seminars throughout the nation, including the American Bar Association-American Law Institute estate planning programs, University of Miami Heckerling Estate Planning Institute, and Southern Federal Tax Institute. He is listed in the Best Lawyers in America in tax law, trusts and estates, and corporate law.
Mr. Markstein received his A.B. degree from Washington & Lee University, LL.B. from the University of Alabama Law School and LL.M. from Harvard Law School.

Speaker: Dr. Susan Desmond-Hellmann, is a physician, pioneering cancer researcher and biotechnology industry executive who has been named chancellor designate of the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Desmond-Hellmann is board-certified in internal medicine and medical oncology and holds a master’s degree in public health from the University of California, Berkeley. She served as president of product development at Genentech where she was responsible for research and development, including having overseen successful trials for therapeutic drugs targeting cancer and other diseases, as well as for business development. Dr. Desmond-Hellmann is currently a member of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco’s Economic Advisory Council. She was named to the Biotech Hall of Fame in 2007 and has been named multiple times to Fortune magazine’s “Top 50 Most Powerful Women in Business” list.
Honoree: Roselyne C. Swig, former Jewish Community Federation President, will be honored during the luncheon program for her long-standing leadership and community philanthropy with the presentation of a bound copy of her oral history prepared by UC Berkeley’s Regional Oral History Office.
2:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.: AFTERNOON SESSION (DONORS, SPECIAL GUESTS AND ADVISORS)
Panel discussion, Ask the Experts: The Latest Techniques for Estate Planning and Business Succession in these Challenging Times. Mr. Markstein will be joined on the panel by Paul Roskoph, Roskoph Associates PC, and Ellen Kahn, Sideman & Bancroft LLP, with Jill Dodd, Manatt, Phelps & Phillips, LLP, as the moderator. They will facilitate an interactive program with specific and timely information about estate planning and preserving your legacy for future generations.
